Garden Decor Tips

For those who enjoy gardening and landscape design, consider how much more visually striking a garden can become through the careful use of garden decor.

Garden decor involves the use of different objects placed in the garden to highlight, compliment, or accentuate the existing flowers, plants, and landscape. This includes familiar garden decor such as the use of humorous plaques and signs, free standing fairies, or tactics such as “tree people”, where a few objects are cleverly attached to a tree to create the appearance of not just a face, but a whole personality for the tree.

Additionally garden decor often includes the use of an integrated and clever lighting set up. For instance, a garden may contain various statues that also function as a solar lighting receiver, funneling energy in and back out through crafty solar panels and lights embedded in the statue.

Garden decor often includes items such as bugs, fairies, clowns, gnomes, signs, and religious figures such as baby angels, Buddha statues, and Virgin Mary statues.

When accentuating a garden using decor, it is important to have a plan which highlights the best parts of the garden. For instance, this may mean leading a viewers eyes to a certain part of the garden with an especially visually striking patch of plants. To accomplish this, decorations may be used to “lead the way” for the eye to follow, so to speak. Another method of highlighting the garden with decorations is to place a bench or creating a seating area in the garden. This naturally suggests that this area of the garden is special; people will enjoy the garden from this area, and a gardener essentially can then design the garden from the standpoint of the bench being the audience and the surrounding area the stage.

Decorations for the garden vary in price and quality. While it is tempting to save money and purchase cheap items, these decorations will likely not last. Considering that any placed in the garden must withstand the pressure of an outdoor environment, the wear and tear on them can be considerable. It is usually worth it to invest in a nicer item that will last longer than it is to save a few dollars when buying something, especially for any decoration that is year round and not seasonal.
